Oil Prices Dip as Middle East Exports Offset Gulf Tensions

Oil prices dipped slightly on Tuesday as traders weighed strong Middle Eastern crude exports against ongoing tensions in the Gulf region. Brent crude futures fell 4 cents to $100.28 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude declined 11 cents to $89.33 a barrel. Analysts noted that while supply concerns have eased modestly, prices remain anchored near the $100 mark due to persistent risks.

The resilience of Middle Eastern oil exports was highlighted by shipping data showing that crude exports exceeded pre-war levels on four days in late September. This trend helped offset concerns about potential disruptions caused by attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the G7's decision to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude from emergency reserves further eased supply anxieties.

However, tensions persisted as Yemen’s Houthi forces claimed responsibility for attacks on several Saudi targets, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, an Aramco refinery in Rabigh, and Abha airport. While there was no immediate confirmation from Saudi authorities, the ongoing conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi forces continued to fuel worries about potential supply disruptions in the region.

Analysts suggested that without significant diplomatic progress or further improvements in export efficiency, oil prices are likely to remain supported. KCM Trade chief analyst Tim Waterer noted that the floor under prices appears reasonably firm given the current geopolitical landscape.
