Oil Prices Drop Amid Diplomatic Hopes for US-Iran Conflict
Oil prices took a hit on Tuesday, falling by 1% as market participants weighed the possibility of a diplomatic solution to the conflict between the US and Iran.
The Brent crude futures fell $0.54, or 0.6%, to $87.82 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude dropped to $81.95 per barrel, down $0.66, or 0.8%.
This decline comes after US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the US and Iran were having 'good talks' and that there was a chance of a resolution. However, he also stated that US strikes would resume if negotiations failed.
Analysts are cautious about the situation, with Marex's Edward Meir noting that while traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped off significantly, it remains unclear whether Houthi fighters have the military capacity to enforce a comprehensive blockade.
