Oil Prices Plummet as Hopes of US-Iran Deal Spark Market Rally
Oil prices plummeted today as hopes of a US-Iran deal sent shockwaves through global markets. The main US oil contract, West Texas Intermediate, dropped five percent to $76.32 a barrel, while international benchmark Brent North Sea crude fell below $80 a barrel.
The sharp decline was triggered by statements from Qatar and US Treasury Secretary indicating that negotiations between the two countries had resumed. This news eased concerns over supply disruptions, which had driven prices up in recent months.
As oil prices dropped, US stocks also experienced a boost, with the Dow Jones rising 1.3 percent and the S&P 500 hitting an intraday record for the first time since June.
