Oil Prices Plummet as Traders Downplay Iran Sanctions Impact
Oil prices plummeted on Tuesday, settling at their lowest level in a week as traders downplayed the impact of US sanctions against Iran. The Brent crude futures dropped by $3.59 (3.9%) to $88.58 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell by $2.65 (3.1%) to $82.36 per barrel.
Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, attributed the shift in market anxiety from military conflict to economic pressure as a reason for the decline. The US sanctions announcement on Monday was not as forceful as some traders had expected, according to Hansen.
Despite Iran's vow to retaliate against the sanctions, Ritterbusch and Associates cautioned that Tuesday's sharp decline in oil prices may be an overreaction by market participants. They warned that the market could swing sharply higher if Iran unleashes military strikes on US installations in the Middle East.
