Oil Prices Plummet as US Halt Attacks on Iran
Oil prices plummeted at the start of the week after the United States halted its attacks on Iran, sparking hopes for a de-escalation in the conflict. The price of Brent crude, the benchmark grade, fell by more than 5% to around $92 per barrel, down from earlier highs above $100.
The U.S. had reported attacks on Iran for 13 consecutive nights prior to the pause, causing oil prices to surge significantly. However, with the end of hostilities over the weekend, Iran also indicated that it would suspend its retaliatory actions, stating that they were merely a response to U.S. aggression.
The economies of East Asia, which rely heavily on oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, initially seemed unaffected by developments in the Middle East. However, as news of the pause spread, markets began to react, with the Hong Kong stock market experiencing some volatility.
