Oil Prices Plummet on Diplomatic Hopes Amid US-Iran Conflict
Oil prices plummeted to their lowest in over a week on Monday, driven by hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough in the US-Iran conflict. Brent crude futures and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude touched their lowest since September 10, with Brent falling to $101.71 a barrel and WTI losing $2.15 to $98.15.
The price drop was attributed to hopes that a diplomatic path may emerge this week amid the UN General Assembly in New York, where Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to attend. Iran's security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, has conveyed conditions for re-engaging in negotiations with the US.
Despite tensions in the Middle East remaining elevated due to Yemen's Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, oil flows from the OPEC kingpin have recovered to over 4 million barrels per day (bpd) after halting some shipments via Yanbu. This enabled exports through the Strait of Hormuz to increase.
