Oil Prices Rise on Diplomatic Stalemate, But Gains Limited

Oil prices rose on August 17 due to the ongoing diplomatic stalemate in West Asia. Despite a lack of progress, Brent crude futures increased by 34 cents or 0.38% to $88.86 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 4 cents or 0.05% to $82.44 per barrel.

The price gains are attributed to the recent attacks on tankers operated by ADNOC in the Hormuz strait and a Saudi Aramco refinery, which led to a surge of over 5% last week. However, analysts believe that prices may not move substantially higher unless there is a halt in crude oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz or a closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Frank Walbaum from Naga.com stated that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains restricted and negotiations have reached a stalemate, limiting the potential for further decline. In the absence of new catalysts, oil prices may continue to consolidate around current levels.
