Oil Prices Rise on Optimism Despite Strait of Hormuz Uncertainty
Oil prices have ticked up slightly today but are still on track for back-to-back weekly declines, despite WTI crude trading up by 1.5%. The situation on the Strait of Hormuz remains uncertain, with Iran and Oman agreeing in principle to allow ships to pass through the shipping lanes, but the final text of the agreement has yet to be approved.
Since August 3rd, ship traffic along the strait has been at a near-total standstill, with single-digit daily averages of vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz. This comes after multiple vessels were struck or targeted by projectiles in their attempts to cross, even when using the Omani corridor.
The US is pushing for a resolution to the conflict, but Iran is also proposing a bill that would bar 'hostile' vessels from using the agreed-upon transit route with Oman and impose fines of up to 20% of cargo value for unauthorized or non-compliant transits. Meanwhile, oil prices continue to be influenced by the headlines coming out of the US, rather than the reality on the ground.
