Oil Prices Skyrocket as Middle East Negotiations Stall
Crude oil prices surged past $90 a barrel on Monday after the deadline for US-Iran negotiations expired, heightening market concerns about supply disruptions.
The negotiations between the US and Iran remain deadlocked, with no signs of resuming. As a result, uncertainty over Middle East energy supplies has increased, leading to buying pressure in the crude futures market.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint through which 20% of global seaborne crude oil passes. The low number of vessels transiting the strait and wariness about supply constraints have contributed to the price surge.
Despite some signs of relief on the supply front, including 'hidden' or 'dark fleet' shipments bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, market participants remain cautious. Analysis suggests that these alternative shipping arrangements are only partially tempering upward price pressure.
