Oil Prices Soar Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions
Crude oil prices have surged amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, where commercial vessels continue to face persistent attacks. At least four tankers came under air assaults while attempting to transit the Persian Gulf this week, with one tanker struck by an unknown projectile and set on fire.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported that a verified source confirmed another tanker was hit by an unknown projectile. Of 16 vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz as of Wednesday, six moved in 'dark mode,' according to data from market intelligence provider Windward.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has redirected 125 commercial vessels, disabled more than three, and boarded two to prevent ships from entering or departing Iranian ports. CENTCOM has established a new task force, Task Force Falcon Strike, utilizing one-way attack drones operated by military support staff from the US and regional partners.
The Pentagon is also sending a third aircraft carrier and an additional marine expeditionary unit of up to 10,000 more troops to the Middle East. President Donald Trump has weighed resuming strikes on Iran following the US midterm elections in November, according to ING Bank's senior commodity strategist Daniel Hynes.
