Oil Prices Soar Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions
The global economy is facing increased uncertainty as tensions in the Middle East escalate. Oil prices have risen to their highest level since July, with Brent crude trading above $100 per barrel and WTI at around $92.30. This surge in energy costs has added pressure on supply chains, particularly in the US, where copper imports are being disrupted by tariffs that have yet to be implemented.
The yen has strengthened against the dollar as investors bet on further interest rate hikes from the Bank of Japan. USD/JPY fell 0.39% on Wednesday and is down about 1.85% for the week, with markets pricing in a 25 basis point increase in the policy rate to 1.25%. The BoJ board member Hajime Takata has hinted at further consecutive hikes.
The conflict between the US and Iran has raised concerns about energy security and regional stability. The US has struck Iranian oil tankers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, while Iran has fired ballistic missiles towards Jordan and threatened to target vessels in the Persian Gulf.
