Oil Prices Soar Amid Iran-US Conflict
Oil prices surged on Wednesday following renewed fighting between Iran and US forces in the Middle East, as investors await the impact of potential disruptions to global oil supplies.
The price of Brent crude jumped 7.3% to settle at $88.09 per barrel after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at American forces, while the US military partnered with Saudi Arabia to strike Tehran-backed militias in Iraq.
This increase is significant, as oil prices had swung between $72 and $102 earlier this month due to uncertainty over whether the US and Iran could reach a deal to allow oil tankers to move freely again from the Middle East to customers worldwide.
The Fed's decision not to raise interest rates also contributed to market volatility, with some analysts warning that higher rates can slow the economy and undercut prices for stocks and other investments.
