Oil Prices Soar Amid Trump's Rejection of Iranian Peace Proposal
US President Donald Trump's rejection of an Iranian peace proposal has sent oil prices soaring by 3% to around $107 per barrel. This development has sparked inflation worries and driven Treasury yields higher, with some market strategists warning that it may motivate the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates.
The Iranian proposal was announced at last week's United Nations General Assembly in New York, and was relayed to the US through Qatari mediators. However, Trump said he had rejected the offer, although he also stated that he expected US negotiators to continue talks this week.
Despite this, energy prices have become a major concern for investors, with Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth, commenting that 'energy has been the one consistent upward pressure on inflation, and anything that continues to put pressure on inflation is going to be something that motivates the Fed to raise rates.'
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 384.11 points, or 0.74%, to 51,446.37, while the S&P 500 lost 64.36 points, or 0.83%, to 7,679.05.
