Oil Prices Soar as Tanker Attacks and Iran Tensions Escalate
Crude oil prices surged over $1 per barrel on Friday due to tanker attacks and stalled peace negotiations between the US and Iran. Brent futures settled at $88.52 a barrel, up 1.67%, while US West Texas Intermediate crude finished at $82.40, up 1.42%. The price increase comes as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains constrained, with 20% of global supply passing through this vital waterway.
Andrew Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, warned that a 'day of reckoning' may come if the strait's traffic continues to be disrupted. He noted that while crude oil prices might be $80 per barrel, diesel and gasoline prices are much higher, reaching $180 and $130 per barrel respectively.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Newsmax's 'Rob Schmitt Tonight' program that the US will apply measures to increase economic pressure on Iran in response to stalled ceasefire talks. This move is likely to further disrupt global oil supplies and drive up prices.
