Oil Prices Soar on Ongoing Hormuz Uncertainty
Oil prices continued their upward climb on Wednesday, marking four consecutive days of gains. The Brent crude futures contract rose by $0.69 or 0.8% to reach $91.71 per barrel, while the US West Texas Intermediate crude futures contract increased by $0.76 or 0.9% to $85.70 per barrel.
The recent price surge is largely attributed to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil trade. The situation remains volatile as conflicting messages from Tehran and Washington have failed to provide clarity on the issue.
US President Donald Trump stated that no talks were taking place with Iran, contradicting Iran's assertion that the strait remained closed to shipping. A temporary ceasefire agreement expired on Monday, and a senior Iranian official announced that his country was adopting a 'fully offensive' military posture due to the diplomatic stalemate.
June Goh, senior oil market analyst at Sparta Commodities, noted that shipping risks are increasing again as attacks from Iran and Houthis remain prevalent in both key chokepoints. As a result, oil prices are being supported in the near term.
