Oil Prices Soar on Uncertainty Over Iran's Future
Crude oil prices have surged by 5% over the past week due to growing uncertainty surrounding Iran. The Trump administration's decision to cease military operations against Iran and impose economic sanctions instead has left the fate of the Strait of Hormuz waterway uncertain.
The Strait is a crucial shipping route, with about one-fifth of the world's crude oil passing through it before the conflict between Iran and the US erupted. Rising crude oil prices have reignited concerns that inflation in the US will continue to rise, putting pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in coming months.
Some analysts predict that the price of crude oil could soon top $100 a barrel as vessel traffic through the Strait remains well below pre-war levels. In fact, Brent crude oil was trading at just under $95 a barrel on August 21, while West Texas Intermediate crude oil was at nearly $87 a barrel.
While some see upside potential in oil stocks, only Chevron has a Strong Buy rating among leading producers Shell, Chevron, and Occidental Petroleum. However, all three stocks appear to have room for growth based on their current share prices.
