Oil Prices Soar Past $100 a Barrel Amid Escalating Iran Tensions

Stocks on Wall Street took a hit on Wednesday as oil prices surged past $100 a barrel for the first time since July. The rise in oil prices comes amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran, which has led to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route that handles a fifth of global oil supplies.

The S&P 500 index fell 0.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 346 points (0.7%) by midday. The Nasdaq composite also declined 0.7%. Retailers were among the hardest hit, with Amazon and Starbucks falling 2.1% and 2%, respectively.

The price of Brent crude, an international benchmark, rose 3.2% to $101.09 a barrel. This increase is likely to fuel already high inflation, which has risen by 32% in the US over the past year, with gasoline prices reaching $4.22 per gallon on average.

The ongoing trade war between the US and its allies, including Canada, is also contributing to higher costs for consumers. The Federal Reserve is keeping a close eye on inflation, which has remained above 3% despite efforts to slow it down through interest rate hikes. With a 62% chance of another rate increase next week, borrowing costs are likely to rise.
