Oil Prices Surge Above $100 as Iran Conflict Escalates
The stock market on Wall Street experienced losses Wednesday due to the escalating conflict between the US and Iran, which led to an increase in oil prices above $100 a barrel.
The S&P 500 index dropped 0.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.8% and the Nasdaq composite declined by 0.6%. The losses were widespread across various sectors, with retailers such as Amazon, Starbucks, and Home Depot contributing to the decline.
However, the energy sector saw gains, with Exxon Mobil rising 2.2% and Chevron increasing by 1.9%. Brent crude oil prices rose 3.4% to settle at $101.21 a barrel, marking the first time it has surpassed $100 since July.
The Iran war is likely to keep oil prices elevated until the US midterm elections in November, according to President Donald Trump. The jump in oil prices has fueled high inflation, with gasoline prices increasing by 32% from last year to $4.22 per gallon and diesel reaching an all-time high of $5.94 overnight.
