Oil Prices Surge Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions
Oil prices rebounded on July 28 after a three-day slide, rising over 3% as tensions in the Middle East escalated. The US military reported that it successfully intercepted an Iranian attack on a base in the region, while Iran-backed militias launched drones at Saudi oil facilities for a second day.
The Brent crude price climbed towards $87 per barrel, paring some of its 16% loss over the past three sessions. West Texas Intermediate was near $83 per barrel. The surge comes after hostilities between the US and Iran re-escalated, causing prices to fluctuate in July.
RBC Capital Markets analysts expressed skepticism about a diplomatic breakthrough, stating that they remain 'exceedingly sceptical' of such an outcome. Rob Thummel from Tortoise Capital Advisors LLC also warned that unless a diplomatic solution is reached, the back end of the crude futures curve may move higher.
The situation has complicated central bankers' efforts to contain inflation, particularly in the US where Federal Reserve policymakers are set to decide on interest rates on July 29. Some forecasters expect a rate hike.
