Oil Prices Surge Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions
Oil prices rose in early Asian trading on Wednesday after new attacks in the Middle East heightened concerns about energy supplies from the region. Brent crude futures increased by 0.81% to $89.63 a barrel, while US light crude rose 0.85% to $83.91 a barrel.
The attacks targeted merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb on Tuesday, with the Houthi rebels claiming responsibility for an attack on a cargo ship that killed three crew members.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary, Mohsen Rezaei, stated that the critically important sea route through the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless the US accepted Iran's conditions for ending the war, including the release of frozen Iranian assets and an end to other conflicts in the region.
