Oil Prices Surge on Diplomatic Stalemate Concerns
Oil prices surged on Monday due to supply concerns stemming from the ongoing diplomatic stalemate over Iran. US President Donald Trump's demand for Iran's surrender and threat to bomb Oman sparked investor pessimism, pushing Brent crude futures up $2.35, or 2.65%, to $90.87 a barrel.
The situation remains precarious as Iran has vowed to escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz if the US fails to implement an interim peace deal within weeks. This has led to uncertainty about oil shipments through the strait, with five vessels transiting on Saturday and none registered for Sunday.
While some analysts believe that a halt in the current flow of crude out of the Strait of Hormuz or a closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could significantly impact prices, others are more cautious. Bjarne Schieldrop at SEB Research noted that prices are trading close to $90 as traders weigh the risk of disruption against the possibility of a resolution.
