Pakistani Government Approves 1 Million Tons Wheat Import Amid Low Stock Levels
The Pakistani government has approved a plan to import one million tons of wheat after all conditions were met. The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) will run an open tender and competitive bidding process to secure the shipment.
The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) had earlier approved the wheat import with specific conditions attached, including a pre-shipment inspection and provincial funding conditions. A steering committee has been formed to oversee these prerequisites.
Pakistan's total wheat output this year stands at around 28.6 million tons, but official data suggests that wheat stocks exist in the country have been withheld by hoarders and middlemen anticipating a sharp price spike.
The import decision is being framed as a stopgap measure to prevent a jump in flour and roti prices while that supply remains locked away.
