Oil Prices Surge on Hormuz Negotiations and Inventory Build

Oil prices continued their upward trend for the fourth consecutive session, driven by news of negotiations over reopening the Strait of Hormuz. West Texas Intermediate traded above $83 a barrel on Aug. 11, marking an 11% climb over the past four sessions.

The market's sensitivity to headlines related to the waterway is evident, with crude prices highly responsive to developments in the region. Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated that the US and Iran are 'approaching some kind of agreement' over the Strait of Hormuz, while Al Jazeera reported that talks between Iran and Oman had reached an advanced stage.

Despite the optimism, military tensions in the Middle East remain elevated, with a recent incident involving a US Navy helicopter firing missiles at a Panama-flagged cargo ship attempting to break through an Iranian port blockade. Helge Andre Martinsen, chief oil analyst at DNB Bank, noted that the market is 'difficult to read with conviction' due to its heavy reliance on news headlines.

The US Energy Information Administration projected that oil supply disruptions tied to the Iran conflict will reach about 600,000 barrels a day by the end of 2027. Additionally, US crude inventories rose by 9.1 million barrels last week, which could mark the biggest build since February if official data confirms this trend.
