Oil Prices Test $100 Floor Amid Supply and Geopolitical Uncertainty
Crude oil prices are testing a crucial support level as traders balance improving Middle East exports against ongoing geopolitical risks. Brent crude hovered near $100.60 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) traded around $89.70 during Asian hours. The market has repeatedly tested the $100 threshold after a recent two-week low, facing resistance due to fragile supply security despite recovering exports.
The bearish outlook has gained traction as G7 nations agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel from emergency reserves over four months. Additionally, OPEC+ maintained November production targets unchanged, while Middle East crude exports rebounded close to pre-war levels. Kpler data revealed exports surpassing the pre-war average of 18 million barrels per day, peaking at 22.5 million barrels on some days in late September. KCM Trade chief analyst Tim Waterer noted that stronger exports and stock releases are easing immediate supply concerns, limiting Brent’s rallies above $102.
However, the geopolitical premium persists as shipping through the Gulf remains costly and dangerous. Attacks around the Hormuz Strait have increased insurance and security costs, while refined-product flows lag behind crude exports, keeping diesel markets tight. Yemen’s Houthis claimed attacks on Saudi infrastructure, and Saudi-backed forces launched an offensive around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. BMI analysts suggested volatility in Gulf shipping could persist until at least early 2027.
The next move in oil prices hinges on whether supply normalization is sustainable. If Gulf exports hold near pre-war levels and G7 barrels enter the market smoothly, Brent could drop below $100 and approach the mid-$90s. However, downside risks remain, as OPEC+ producers still operate below quotas, tanker attacks escalate, and global inventories stay tight after months of disruption. The $100 level now reflects confidence, or lack thereof, in Middle East supply stability.
