Oil Prices Top $100: Energy Stocks in Focus Amid Rising Commodity Prices
Oil prices have risen above $100 a barrel, and investors are taking notice. This surge in oil prices has put renewed focus on energy stocks, particularly those with exposure to rising commodity prices.
Three companies that come under scrutiny are Kolibri Global Energy (TSX:KEI), Ovintiv (OVV), and Murphy Oil (MUR). These firms have significant operations in the US and Canada, where oil production is a major driver of revenue.
Kolibri Global Energy is a small upstream oil producer focused on developing its Caney Shale acreage in Oklahoma. The company has seen strong growth expectations, but also faces margin pressure and reliance on borrowing.
Ovintiv, on the other hand, is a large North American oil and gas producer with significant operations in the Permian and Anadarko basins. With an upgraded BBB credit rating and a focus on returning cash to shareholders through buybacks and dividends, Ovintiv's profile has improved.
Murphy Oil, meanwhile, has a mid-sized portfolio of crude oil and natural gas projects across the US, Canada, and select international offshore basins. While it has been working to keep costs in check, investors may want to consider its high P/E ratio, thinner margins, and reliance on capital-intensive offshore projects.
