Oil Prices Volatile Amid Uncertainty Over Hormuz Reopening
Oil prices have been influenced by ongoing uncertainty over the potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that carries a fifth of the world's oil. Despite earlier optimism about a deal between Iran and Oman, Iran has insisted that the US must satisfy several conditions before the strait can reopen. These demands include US compensation for attacks on Iran.
The Brent crude futures price stood at $83.54 a barrel on Monday, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 15 cents to $78.03 a barrel. The Strait of Hormuz has been a major concern for oil markets due to the risk of supply disruptions.
Sugandha Sachdeva, founder of SS WealthStreet, said that crude oil prices remain caught between opposing forces as markets assess the possibility of a breakthrough over the Strait of Hormuz against Iran's conditions. She noted that any major progress towards restoring unrestricted shipping could exert downward pressure on oil prices.
