Oil Producers Slump as Crude Prices Retreat
Oil producers EOG Resources and ConocoPhillips fell by 6% and 5%, respectively, on Wednesday as crude prices retreated. Occidental Petroleum also dropped 5%. The decline was not due to company-specific news but rather a decrease in crude oil prices, which directly affects the revenue of these exploration and production companies.
The SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (XOP) slid 4% to $192.43, while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) rose 0.4% to $760.45. ConocoPhillips remains up 7% over the past month, indicating that today's drop is a partial giveback rather than a change in business fundamentals.
Oil and gas producers are sensitive to crude price fluctuations because they own the barrels they sell. A decrease in crude prices directly affects their realized revenue. In this case, no company-specific news was driving the selloff, as all three companies have different basins, hedging profiles, and capital return programs.
