Oil Sands Production Expected to Reach New Heights for 25th Year
Canadian oil sands production is expected to reach new heights for the 25th consecutive year. According to an S&P Global Energy analysis, production will average a record 3.5 million barrels per day in 2026, up from last year's levels by 100,000 b/d (3%). This growth comes despite periods of low oil prices and regional price volatility.
The majority of the increase is attributed to the optimization of existing facilities. However, there is also a potential for renewed investment in new construction projects, which could add additional upside to the longer-term outlook.
Kevin Birn, Chief Canadian Oil Markets Analyst at S&P Global Energy, notes that the Canadian oil sands have proven resilient despite challenges and uncertainties. He questions whether growth will continue or accelerate with new projects coming forward.
