Oil Sands Shifts to New Growth Model: Focus on Reliability and Technology

The oil sands industry in Alberta is shifting towards a new growth model, one that prioritizes capital discipline and operational reliability over large-scale greenfield projects.

This transformation has already begun to take hold, with production increasing by 41% since 2015, reaching approximately 3.56 million barrels per day in 2024. The industry is now focusing on extracting more production from existing facilities through debottlenecking, improved maintenance practices, and technological innovation.

Suncor, one of the major oil sands operators, is planning to add around 100,000 barrels per day of additional upstream production by 2028 while targeting a US$5-per-barrel reduction in its corporate WTI breakeven price. The company also expects approximately 60% of its oil sands bitumen production to come from in-situ operations by 2040.

Reliability is becoming one of the cheapest forms of growth, as maintaining production capacity can itself represent a major accomplishment for mines such as Syncrude's Mildred Lake Extension. The industry has made significant strides in reducing emissions per barrel, with Alberta government data showing a 28% decline between 2012 and 2024.
