Oil Soars, But Oil Stocks Lag Behind
Crude oil futures have seen a significant surge in recent weeks, with both WTI and Brent increasing by over 20%. The one-month percentage change in WTI crude oil futures is up 28.5%, while Brent is up 22.6%. In contrast, the State Street SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (XOP) has only gained 10.1% and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) is up just 6.2%. This disparity between oil prices and oil stocks may present an opportunity for energy bulls to add more exposure to the sector.
For those who believe oil will remain 'higher for longer', this situation can be exploited by increasing investment in energy stocks, both absolutely and relative to the market. This would involve taking advantage of the disconnect between rising oil prices and lagging stock performance.
