Oil Spill Hits Qeshm Island Amid Tensions Over Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz has been plagued by another oil spill, this time affecting Iran's southern Qeshm island. Tehran claims that a foreign bulk carrier is to blame for the pollution, citing preliminary evidence.

However, TankerTrackers, a US-hosted platform monitoring global shipping movements, disputes this account. According to them, the pollution resulted from an Iranian attack on the Minoan Pioneer in Omani waters on August 3.

The spill has caused significant environmental damage, with approximately 32,000 square meters of coastline affected and waters covering about 90,000 square meters polluted. Iran's Environmental Protection Organization describes it as another example of widespread pollution affecting the region's marine ecosystem.

Baqaei, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, called for those responsible to compensate for the environmental harm, stating that every party benefiting from commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz carries a legal and moral obligation to remediate the damage.
