Oil Tanker Attacks Surge as Middle East Conflicts Escalate

Oil tanker attacks have increased significantly in recent weeks due to escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Europe. Iran has escalated its attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to assert control over this critical oil passage. The Houthi militia in Yemen has launched a second front, targeting Saudi tankers in the Red Sea after declaring a maritime embargo against Riyadh.

The situation in the southern Red Sea and Hormuz has deteriorated significantly, causing a steep decline in ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Dimitris Maniatis, CEO of Marisks, the collapse of an agreement between the U.S. and Iran aimed at reopening the strait has worsened conditions for merchant shipping.

Since March 1, 61 commercial ships have been attacked in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman, leading to the deaths of at least 17 seafarers along with numerous injuries. The situation poses a substantial risk to Saudi Arabia's oil exports, which had been redirected through a pipeline to the western coast due to threats in Hormuz.

The oil market is grappling with multiple conflicts, leading to a sharp rise in oil prices. Brent crude surpassed $100 per barrel for the first time since May, climbing more than 30% in July as geopolitical tensions mounted. Experts warn that if the escalation continues, Brent oil prices could soar past the 2022 peak of $128 per barrel.
