Oman-Iran Deal Fails to Ease Tensions Over Hormuz Shipping Routes
Iran and Oman have made significant progress in negotiations over the management of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil and gas trade. According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei, the two countries have agreed on a 'shipping map' that will govern traffic through the strait. This development is seen as a major breakthrough in efforts to end the almost six-month-long war between Iran and the US.
The agreement on the shipping map forms part of a broader accord aimed at ensuring safe transit for vessels through the Strait, while also upholding the sovereignty of both countries. However, it remains unclear whether ships will be charged transit fees or what security arrangements would be made for them.
US President Donald Trump has expressed his skepticism over the agreement, stating that an agreement between Iran and Oman does not guarantee the reopening of the Strait. He added that a US blockade of Iranian ports is still in place and that he plans to hit Iran's economy hard with new economic measures.
