Oman overtakes US as India’s leading LNG supplier in September
In a significant shift in India's energy imports, Oman emerged as the top supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in September, surpassing the United States. Oman accounted for 27% of India's LNG shipments during the month, while Qatar's share dropped sharply to just 4.3%. This change reflects India's ongoing efforts to diversify its energy sources amid geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Data from commodity analytics firm Kpler reveals that India imported 585,000 tonnes of LNG from Oman in September, marking an 11.6% increase from August. Meanwhile, Nigeria became the second-largest supplier with 351,000 tonnes, though this was 35% lower than the previous month's shipments.
The overall decline in Qatar's market share is notable, as it was previously India's dominant LNG supplier. The shift underscores India's strategy to reduce dependency on any single source, particularly in the context of regional conflicts.
India's total LNG imports for September fell by 14%, highlighting the volatility in global energy markets and the country's evolving import patterns.
