OMCs Bounce Back as Brent Crude Pulls Back, Stocks Rise
Indian oil marketing companies (OMCs) Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) saw their stocks rise on September 30th, with IOC up 2.9%, BPCL up 1.9%, and HPCL up 1.9%. The gain was due to Brent crude pulling back sharply after exports from the Middle East began to recover.
Crude oil is a major raw material for OMCs, so when its price falls while retail fuel prices remain stable, marketing margins improve. In this case, lower crude prices reduced costs for IOC, HPCL, and BPCL, widening their profit margins.
The rally also affected gas stocks such as GAIL, Petronet LNG, and Indraprastha Gas, with all three up over 1%. The Indian Oil marketing companies have been struggling due to high crude prices in recent months, which had squeezed their margins. However, with Brent crude pulling back, these stocks may see a boost.
