OPEC+ Boosts Oil Production Amid Ongoing Disruptions
OPEC+ has agreed to boost oil production by 188,000 barrels per day from September, according to a joint statement released after an online meeting on Sunday. The decision was made by Saudi Arabia, Russia, and five other key members of the organization. Analysts had widely expected this increase, as OPEC+ aims to manage the surplus that could emerge once export flows normalize.
Rystad Energy's Jorge Leon noted that 'OPEC+ has finished unwinding its voluntary cuts,' but warned that 'the real market impact will come when normal export flows resume.' He also stated that 'having completed the restoration campaign, OPEC+ has little incentive to rush into further supply changes.'
Some member countries, such as Iraq, have expressed a desire to significantly boost production, while Russia is facing challenges due to repeated Ukrainian drone attacks on its oil infrastructure. The group faces potentially difficult talks over new production quotas next year following the September increase.
