OPEC Recovery Looms Large for North American Energy Independence ETF
The Ninepoint North American Energy Independence ETF (NYSEARCA:ENRG) has taken the market by storm since its launch on September 22, 2026. The fund's premise is that the US and Canada can supply their own energy needs, but it remains to be seen whether this thesis will hold up in the face of OPEC's projected recovery.
With WTI crude prices already swinging wildly over the past year - from $55.44 in December 2025 to $114.58 on April 7 - ENRG investors are hoping that domestic producers can maintain their pricing premium. However, the EIA's May Short-Term Energy Outlook suggests that OPEC output is set to recover to 29.14 million barrels per day by the first quarter of 2027, which could put downward pressure on North American oil prices.
Another factor at play is demand, with regular gasoline averaging $4.48 per gallon above the $4.00 level where household budgets start to strain. The fund's holdings disclosure, which has yet to be released, will be crucial in determining whether ENRG is heavily weighted towards gas producers or pipelines.
