OPEC+'s Output Hike Ignored Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

OPEC+'s decision to increase oil production quotas for September may seem significant, but it's largely irrelevant in the current market due to disruptions caused by the Iran conflict. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and the threat to the Bab el-Mandeb waterway persists, making it unlikely for OPEC+ members to ship their agreed-upon production. The seven core members of OPEC+, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Algeria, Kazakhstan, and Oman, agreed to increase production by 188,000 barrels per day (bpd) in September.

This move completes the phased rollback of a 1.65 million bpd supply cut originally agreed upon in 2023 when the UAE was still part of OPEC+. However, with current data showing that the eight members of OPEC pumped only 20.276 million bpd in June, 6.246 million bpd below their target, it's clear that production quotas are not being met.

Russia, a key non-OPEC member, produced 8.928 million bpd in June, nearly 1 million bpd below its agreed quota. While the decision to wind back voluntary production cuts may have little weight in the current market, it highlights the challenges facing oil exporters and importers.
