Texas to Host World's Largest Gas-Powered AI Data Centre
A joint venture between PowerPlay AI and neocloud provider Sharon AI is planning to develop a massive 400-megawatt natural gas-powered artificial intelligence (AI) data centre near Abilene, Texas. The project aims to be operational by 2028 and will address the significant power requirements of advanced AI compute infrastructure.
According to Luke Velterop, CEO of PowerPlay AI, the accelerating demand for power outpaces grid response, with interconnection queues extending into the 2030s. He emphasized the need for scalable power solutions that align with federal policy encouraging industry to 'build, bring or buy' energy.
The project's reliance on securing gas supply and an independent power producer (IPP) highlights the complex energy procurement challenges facing new data centre developments, particularly those catering to high-density AI workloads.
