Optimism Swells at Fort McMurray Oil Sands Expo as Pipeline Plans Unfold

Fort McMurray recently hosted its largest Oil Sands Expo in over a decade. The event saw a 37% increase in exhibitors compared to last year, with more than 200 companies attending from various sectors including drones and artificial intelligence.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith noted that the sense of optimism among attendees was palpable, attributing it to recent announcements by the federal and provincial governments. She stated that people are feeling 'pretty good' about the energy sector's prospects compared to a couple of years ago.

Organizer Wes Scott attributed the excitement on the trade show floor to people being more confident about attending events post-pandemic. He also highlighted the impact of recent commitments by Alberta and Ottawa to build a new West Coast oil pipeline, as well as plans to double oilsands production to eight million barrels per day by 2035.

Some exhibitors from the U.S. were in attendance, indicating that American companies still see opportunities in Canada's energy sector. However, not everyone is optimistic, with Kris Yarish of Alcor Facilities Management cautioning against expecting record-breaking growth like during the last oilsands boom.
