Orion Minerals Shines Bright in JSE Copper Juniors
Orion Minerals, the Financial Mail's Junior Mining Hot Stocks selection for 2026, has outperformed its peers in the JSE's junior copper counters. The company's share price has increased by 26% year to date, compared to a decline of 43% for Copper 360 and 35% for Jubilee Metals.
The standout performance can be attributed to two key factors: technical validation and funding certainty. Orion has completed definitive feasibility studies (DFSs) for its flagship assets, the Prieska Copper Zinc Mine and the Okiep Copper Project. This comprehensive technical and economic assessment of a development option gives investors confidence in the project's viability.
By contrast, Copper 360 has filed a mining viability report but missed production targets since listing in 2023 and experienced an exodus of senior executives, weighing heavily on investor confidence. Jubilee Metals remains at an earlier stage of technical definition at Molefe, with ongoing exploration and limited external validation.
Orion's funding certainty is also a significant factor, having recently raised R182m in equity and secured a binding $250m prepayment agreement with Glencore. This reduces the risk of dilutive equity raises and provides an important external validation signal, suggesting serious technical, commercial, and legal scrutiny.
The outlook for copper remains supportive, driven by demand from grid expansion, electrification, electric vehicles, renewable energy, and data centers. The International Copper Study Group expects the refined copper market to move into deficit in 2026. Orion's focus now shifts from study work to execution, with first production from Prieska targeted for the second quarter of 2027.
