Osaka Gas has acquired a significant stake in Australia's Browse gas project from BP.

The Japanese utility will purchase a five per cent stake through its joint venture company, Osaka Gas Browse, with state-backed Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).

The Browse project, operated by Woodside Energy, is currently in the pre-front-end engineering and design stage and is expected to produce approximately 11 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas annually.

Osaka Gas expects to secure around 550,000 tonnes per year of LNG through its stake in the project.
