Pacific Link Pipeline Designation Sparks Optimism for Oilsands Growth

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are optimistic about a new West Coast pipeline, Pacific Link, which they believe will help stimulate growth in Alberta's oilsands. The federal government has designated the project as one of national interest, allowing it to be fast-tracked through the approval process.

The last boom in Alberta's oilsands occurred from the mid-2000s to mid-2010s, but this time around, Carney and Smith say it will be different. Oilsands companies have been hesitant to invest in large-scale projects due to a lack of pipeline capacity, regulatory hurdles, and environmental concerns.

However, with the new Pacific Link pipeline and policy changes, oilsands companies may be more willing to invest in expansion projects. The industry has matured since the last boom, with companies adopting more efficient practices and collaborating on labour and infrastructure needs.
