Pacific Link Pipeline Project Gets National Interest Designation Despite Cost Concerns
Ottawa and Alberta's support for the Pacific Link oil pipeline project is seen as a significant step forward, but former Alberta deputy energy minister Grant Sprague emphasizes that this designation is not final approval. 'This is the beginning of a long process,' he said.
The project was designated a project of national interest under the Building Canada Act on Thursday, which means the federal government has signaled its willingness to support it without vetoing it later. However, Sprague notes that there's still no official approval and that costs could rise due to factors like the proposed Roberts Bank terminal in Delta, B.C.
Trans Mountain Corporation, a Crown-owned entity, will lead the technical and regulatory work on the project, including route planning and Indigenous consultation. The open season next spring is expected to be an early indication of commercial support from industry players.
