Pacific Link Pipeline Project Moves Forward with National Interest Designation
The Pacific Link pipeline project has taken a significant step forward after being designated as a national interest project by Prime Minister Mark Carney. This decision paves the way for the long-awaited pipeline to move forward, with design and construction potentially beginning as early as September 1, 2027.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith hailed the announcement, stating that it shows what can be achieved when provincial and federal governments work together. She emphasized that a new pipeline to the Pacific is crucial for Canada's energy sector, citing the country's large reserves of oil and gas as well as its skilled workforce.
However, not everyone is celebrating the decision. NDP Leader Avi Lewis expressed concerns about the environmental impact of the project, stating that it will put Canadians at risk without providing any benefits. He also pointed out that indigenous nations have opposed the pipeline, and the industry itself has been unwilling to finance it.
