Pakistan Exposed: LNG Disruptions Fuel Energy Security Concerns

Pakistan's heavy reliance on liquefied natural gas (LNG) has exposed it to significant energy security risks, according to a Gastech report. The country is among Asia's worst-hit nations due to disruptions in LNG supplies following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The report highlights that Qatar and the United Arab Emirates together account for around 99% of Pakistan's LNG supplies. These supplies are mainly used for power generation, fertilizer production, and industrial activity, with LNG making up about 30% of the country's total gas supply.

Pakistan's vulnerability to geopolitical shocks affecting major energy routes has been underscored by the International Energy Agency (IEA). The agency notes that Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan were particularly exposed due to a large share of their LNG supplies transiting through the Strait of Hormuz. In 2024, gas-fired power generation accounted for around 25% of Pakistan's electricity mix.
