Pakistan is among the worst-hit nations by liquefied natural gas (LNG) disruptions due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report from Gastech. The country relies heavily on LNG for power generation, fertiliser production, and industrial use, with Qatar and the UAE supplying around 99% of its needs.

The report notes that beyond addressing immediate challenges, policymakers in Asia may now be reviewing how to future-proof domestic energy and power systems with a renewed focus on energy security. This could involve accelerating the deployment of renewables such as solar and wind farms, as well as speeding up investment in long-term infrastructure like gas storage.

The Universal Gas Distribution Company (UGDC) has been discussing potential projects with international firms, including gas storage and long-term LNG supplies. The company's CEO, Ghiyas Abdullah Paracha, said that the conference was significant for Pakistan's gas sector reforms and the opening of its market to private-sector participation.

The Gastech report highlights the impact of the conflict in the Middle East on global energy maps, with countries looking at options to expand operating reserves and rethinking fuel stockpiles. The disruption has prompted Pakistan's government to consider alternative sources of power, including coal, hydropower, and nuclear power.
