Pakistan Prepares Winter Gas Plan with Focus on Uninterrupted Supply
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad on October 6, 2026, to strategize winter gas load management. He emphasized the need for uninterrupted gas imports and proactive measures to handle increased winter demand. The meeting highlighted prioritizing domestic consumers for local gas supply, while Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) would support power generation and industrial sectors.
A public awareness campaign will be launched to encourage the use of alternative energy sources at the household level, aiming to reduce pressure on domestic gas reserves. The government is also working to ensure a steady supply from northern gas reserves and considering bank financing for electricity-operated heating appliances.
Pakistan's domestic gas production stands at 3.2 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd), with agreements in place for importing around 1 bcfd of RLNG from Qatar and Italy's ENI. Additional LNG purchases are being considered to meet higher winter demand, with nine cargoes required in December alone. The supply depends on developments in the Strait of Hormuz, where around 250-300 million cubic feet per day of RLNG is currently used for power plants.
