Pakistan prioritizes wheat management for food security and farmer support
Pakistan's Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, emphasized the need for an effective support price to ensure fair compensation for farmers and boost crop output during the first high-level meeting of the Wheat Management Committee. The meeting, co-chaired by Hussain and Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah, focused on strengthening the economic position of farmers and increasing agricultural production.
The minister stressed that wheat prices should be determined based on production costs and prevailing ground realities. He highlighted the importance of national consensus between federal and provincial governments to set wheat prices and ensure food security. A transparent wheat procurement system was also deemed essential to protect farmers' interests.
Hussain underscored the need for adequate strategic reserves to maintain uninterrupted wheat availability across the country. He noted that stabilizing wheat prices and ensuring reasonable rates for consumers remained a key government priority. Effective coordination and a joint strategy between federal and provincial governments were identified as crucial for comprehensive wheat management.
