Pakistan Seeks to Diversify Energy Sources Amid Heavy Reliance on Imports

Pakistan's Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that the government is committed to strengthening energy security, accelerating oil and gas exploration, attracting investment, and ensuring transparency in the petroleum sector.

Malik stated that Pakistan imports around 90% of its energy requirements, with domestic oil production standing at approximately 70,000 barrels per day against a daily demand of around 500,000 barrels. He emphasized the need to accelerate domestic oil and gas exploration to reduce dependence on imports.

The minister revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir have tasked a leading international company with preparing a comprehensive roadmap for the country's energy sector, which will be presented to the national leadership in the coming months.
